Curriculum for Excellence

Modern Languages

In 2004 the Curriculum Review Group made a commitment to update, simplify and prioritise the curriculum. These draft experiences and outcomes in modern languages are the fulfilment of that promise.

Cover paper for draft experiences and outcomes in modern languages

This paper explains some of the thinking behind the draft experiences and outcomes in modern languages. It is intended to support discussion in early years centres, schools and local authorities. It provides questions to support professional reflection and engagement. The emphasis at this stage should be on experimenting with and enjoying the new language. The experiences recognise this and are intended to lay the foundations for second level.

At early and at first levels, children will be developing generic skills in their first language, including taking part in conversation and developing listening, reading and writing skills, and knowledge about language. The experiences and outcomes for modern languages are described at the second, third and fourth levels.
