In 2004 the Curriculum Review Group made a commitment to update, simplify and prioritise the curriculum. These draft experiences and outcomes in literacy and English are the fulfilment of that promise.
This paper is for practitioners in all sectors of education and should be read alongside the cover paper for the draft experiences and outcomes in literacy and English. The literacy experiences and outcomes apply to all aspects of learning and across all curriculum areas. All practitioners have a responsibility to develop, reinforce and extend the skills identified.
The cover paper explains some of the thinking behind the draft experiences and outcomes in literacy and English. It is intended to support discussion by practitioners in all educational settings and local authorities. It should be read alongside Building the Curriculum 1.
The related draft experiences and outcomes for modern languages, Gaelic (learners), Gàidhlig and classical languages have been issued separately.
The literacy and English framework is designed to develop critical and creative thinking as well as competence in listening and talking, reading, writing and the personal, interpersonal and teamworking skills which are so important in life and in the world of work. The literacy experiences and outcomes promote the development of skills in using language, particularly those that are used regularly by everyone in their everyday lives. These include the ability to apply knowledge about language.
