In 2004 the Curriculum Review Group made a commitment to update, simplify and prioritise the curriculum. These draft experiences and outcomes in mathematics are the fulfilment of that promise.

Cover paper for draft experiences and outcomes in mathematics

This paper explains some of the thinking behind the draft experiences and outcomes in mathematics. It is intended to support discussion in early years centres, schools and local authorities. It provides questions to support professional reflection and engagement. The mathematics experiences and outcomes are designed to stimulate children’s interest and promote creativity and innovation.

Mathematics is the study of the properties, relationships and patterns in number and shape, and the application of this knowledge to analyse, interpret, simplify and solve problems. It is a rich and stimulating subject with the capacity to engage and fascinate learners of all ages, interests and abilities. Within the mathematics document, some experiences and outcomes have additionally been identified as numeracy.
