In 2004 the Curriculum Review Group made a commitment to update, simplify and prioritise the curriculum. These draft experiences and outcomes in religious and moral education are the fulfilment of that promise.
This paper explains some of the thinking behind the draft experiences and outcomes in religious and moral education. It is intended to support discussion in early years centres, schools, other educational establishments and local authorities. It provides questions to support professional reflection and engagement.
Scotland is a nation whose people hold a wide range of beliefs, from the many branches of the Christian faith represented throughout the land, to those who follow the world’s other major religions and those whose beliefs lie outwith religious traditions. Such diversity enriches the Scottish nation and serves as an inspiring and thought-provoking background for Scotland’s children and young people in the development of their own beliefs and values.
Religious and moral education helps children and young people to explore the world’s major religions and views which are independent of religious belief, and to be challenged by these different beliefs and values. It supports children and young people in developing their values and their capacity for moral judgement. Through developing awareness and appreciation of the value of each individual in a diverse society, religious and moral education engenders responsible attitudes to other people. This awareness and appreciation will assist in counteracting prejudice and intolerance in issues such as sectarianism and discrimination more broadly.
Drawing on the best of current practice, the draft experiences and outcomes build on the strength of previous documents including, ‘A Curriculum Framework for Children 3-5’, ‘5-14 Religious and Moral Education National Guidelines’, Standard Grade and National Qualifications Framework (SCQF) expectations and core skills. The draft experiences and outcomes reflect a significant de-cluttering of content to allow greater opportunity for personalisation and choice, depth and reflection.
