Cover paper for draft experiences and outcomes in technologies

This paper explains some of the thinking behind the draft experiences and outcomes in technologies and is intended to support discussion within and between early years centres, schools, local authorities, colleges and their wider communities. To assist in this process, it provides questions to support professional reflection and engagement.

Technology – the application of knowledge and skills to extend human capabilities and help satisfy human needs and wants – has had profound effects on society.

Within Curriculum for Excellence, the technologies curriculum area relates particularly to contexts which provide scope for developing technological skills, knowledge, understanding and attributes through creative, practical and work-related activities. For this reason, the framework provides draft experiences and outcomes that can be applied in craft, design, engineering, graphics, food, textile and information technologies. They offer a rich context for the development of all of the four capacities and for developing life skills that are recognised as being important for success in the world of work. They also offer an excellent platform for a range of technology-related careers.

Within the technologies framework, the ICT draft experiences and outcomes identified in italics promote the development of those skills required for everyday life and work. Although these form part of the technologies framework, all practitioners, in each sector, have a contribution to make to ensure that these skills are extended and used effectively in learning, taking account of the differing levels of expertise of each child and young person.
