Enriched Readers Programme

Each month pupils were divided into groups using the random group technique from the 'co-operative learning' approach. This allowed pupils to work with different classmates, bringing about a stronger class identity.

Each genre/month was highlighted using LRC displays, reading booklets and uses of individual fonts and clip art to give a clear theme for each genre (for example, a turkey for Thanksgiving). Pupils' work was also displayed in the LRC and English corridor - promoting the excellent work of pupils.

Book choice and review

Pupils were given a free choice of book, within the genre. Pupils struggled with this aspect of the programme: both choosing the books and reading them in the selected timeframe (usually a month) proved difficult. However the LRC manager and the transition teacher worked hard to show pupils various strategies for both book choice and reading for pleasure. By the end of the project many of the pupils were comfortable with choosing books for pleasure.

All pupils wrote book reviews and many were displayed in the library to promote the books they had read. Pupils were also encouraged to share their opinions with others in the class and this led to many books being taken out on the recommendation of others.
